Regionalism: the Path of Hatred
Dr. Taha Farie Ghaleb
Regionalism is one of the forms of discrimination and racism in countries and societies around the world; the term “regionalism” is modern, and has only been used at the present time, and sometimes bears another name, which is provincialism. The term regionalism was not mentioned in history before and was not mentioned at all in the incidents and stories of Arab history, but it recently appeared in the miSHodern era. Regionalism has begun to appear in contemporary countries and it was a result of a reaction to tribalism and intolerance to it, so those who suffered from its effects resorted to it, and adopted regional racism to create anti-tribal parties, which are often internal social parties.
Regional racism, like tribalism, sectarianism, and populism is still striking its fangs, instilling its ideas in various parts of the world, and has become, at the present time, a crisis of morals and values with which hiding heads in the sand does not help, as some have practiced it openly as one of the requirements of distinction and differentiation among the societies, including Yemen, and in the various political, media and social fields. Thus, the enlightened person in his thoughts, aware of the realities of matters, the values of humanity and the standards of civilization avoids these misconceptions and erroneous ideas about the rights of his homeland and society. In fact, it is considered one of the extremist behaviors, which increase the person intolerance and deepen the introversion and individualism and isolation around oneself, and regionalism provokes hatred in all its meanings among members of the society, and causes racial hostilities and conflicts with others, so that individuals move away more and more from the concept of social peace, which is the basis of the cohesion and development of peoples that respects the human being and the normal civilized life.
It can be pointed out here to the various forms of hatred caused by regionalism, with its dangerous effects on societies, especially when it becomes a culture for some, as it includes hatred, envy and jealousy, ignites the spirit of revenge, extremism in judging matters towards others, hostility to success and the situation of annoyances, discourages and other things, all of which are projections as a result of an inherent community disease.
It should be noted here that hatred in our current time is rising and developing for internal and external psychological reasons, and its evidences are many, where the culture of revenge and violence against the other, just as the tools of hatred may vary between hateful sectarianism and organized regionalism, racial discrimination and narrow provincialism. There are contradictory images of the lives of some that reflect the hatred community; some individuals may appear on social media as if they live in a utopia, but in real life, they do not achieve peace with each other, and we may see that the error is very light, but the reactions may be harsh, which can be attributed to some incorrect beliefs.
Hence, what is required of us is to work with all vigor and sincere will to end the culture of hatred and limit it by all possible means, including employing the media because of their effective role in persuading members of society, especially those who embrace regionalism, and through social media that is widely popular with young people, and through the available social meetings and events, with an explanation and clarification of the negatives and effects of regionalism on societies, and the division, fragmentation and hatred behind it among the society, and by affirming commitment to the values of tolerance, love, giving, and justice in looking at the reins, in order to avoid injustice to others. And that every wrong behavior has a specific actor, and every problem has its causes that must be dealt with without exaggeration in matters and judgments.
In conclusion, we affirm that limiting regional and sectarian ideas and cultures requires all of us, individuals, institutions and official bodies to spread the enlightening thought and a culture that accepts the other, and to spread the spirit of tolerance so that our actions become balanced, and our reactions moderately far from extremism and exaggeration.
