Humanitarian Action and the Culture of Sacrifice
Dr. Taha Farie Ghaleb
Humanitarian action is one of the important goals pursued and intended by individuals or institutions worldwide because of its positive impact on the growth and development of the individuals' personalities and their sense of loyalty and belonging to the society in which they live. This beautiful volunteer work represents a classy culture embraced by all people with their various traditions and customs. We mean by “Humanitarian Action” here all the positive actions and initiatives that are issued by those who voluntarily do them in order to serve the community members and support them morally or financially in a way that relieves them of some of their suffering or life problems, without waiting for a specific wage or profit as a result of that work.
The importance of humanitarian work is shown in community service, and developing the values of good and giving through various humanitarian activities. The humanitarian action is fundamentally a service to society and a distinct positive initiative in providing support to its members which they are unable to fulfil in reality. Among the goals of community service are the inculcation of great human values such as justice, cooperation, social solidarity, empathy and serving the needy, as well as other honourable humanitarian works. In order for volunteers to innovate in humanitarian work, they must adapt to the society in which they live and feel its suffering and needs. Rather, volunteers and those wishing to practice this work learn the culture of sacrifice required in this aspect, given the importance of absorbing this type of important and necessary human culture for all societies.
The importance and benefit of humanitarian actions stem from the difficult conditions and extreme poverty experienced by millions of people as a result of conflicts and wars. The more people suffering, the greater is the need for someone to support them to get out of what they suffer from such as tight for money, distress and turmoil.
Humanitarian work is a fundamental pillar in building societies, and enhancing social cohesion between individuals of any society. The diversified and developed role that this charitable and positive work plays in seeking to promote development goals deserves strong support from other stakeholders, because of its effective and fruitful results in the lives of people of different cultures and environments.
It should be noted here that one of the most important criteria for the development of humanitarian work is the creation of integration and organization between humanitarian work on the one hand, and the practices of official and private institutions on the other hand,. In addition to the need to control the added-value of humanitarian work and the extent of its contribution to national development. This requires the existence of a clear framework and appropriate mechanisms to stimulate this type of human action, organize it and develop it properly, which establishes the basis for a sustainable increase in the volume of its contribution to society. This humanitarian work, regardless of its various forms and types, must be associated with the principle of sacrifice, which includes many meanings, the most important of which are loyalty, sincerity, and honesty in treatment. A person cannot live alone without people and society. We all need each other, regardless of the method or type of need. Sacrifice is a great human emotion that cannot be described in brief or through these limited lines. However, hundreds of books may be needed to clarify and define them, as this sense, emotions and feelings must be experienced[1].
Humanitarian work focuses on helping different groups and segments in a positive way, and it is beneficial and fruitful to its owner, and society in general, and these benefits include increasing the energies of the individual and the nation, sharpening motivation, and helping to gain love, respect, and confidence from people, society, and a sense of self-satisfaction, expanding the horizons of the nation to build and develop a cohesive society, create a kind of trust, love and bonding between members of the society, help the vulnerable, and feel the pleasure of giving and sacrifice, that is worth much more among some great souls, and which protects the owner from many worries that stand in his life as an obstacle towards humanitarian work in all its forms and types[2].
